In 1771 9 young men from the area captured and destroyed munitions of war being transported through NC by Royal Governor William Tryon. The brave feat contributed to the independence movement in the area. The next major event in Concord history was when 12-year-old Conrad Reed found a piece of gold the size of and iron. Hundreds of gold miners would later scour the piedmont of NC including what is now uptown Charlotte. Vistors can still pan for gold and tour the site at Reed Gold Mine.
